Risk factors for intellectual disability in children with spastic cerebral palsy: Children with cerebral palsy, a non-progressive disorder of posture and movement caused by prenatal or perinatal lesions of the brain are at increased risk of other disabilities, such as intellectual disability. This study aims to determine the patterns of risk of intellectual disability in children with spastic CP using a cross-sectional, population-based study design using the Northern Ireland Cerebral Palsy Register. Results showed that children with bilateral spastic CP are at increased risk of intellectual disability, with those born at term at the highest risk. These findings emphasise the need for early screening and referral to appropriate specialists.
Child maltreatment fatalities among children and adolescents 5–17 years old: Little research has examined child abuse and neglect deaths among older children and adolescents. This study aims to epidemiologically describe child maltreatment-related fatalities among children in the United States 5−17 years old using 10 years of data collected from the United States National Violent Death Reporting System (2006-2015). The study presented 285 abuse- and/or neglect-related fatalities during the study period with the mean age of the victims being 9.2 years, and the most common injury mechanism reported were firearms. These fatalities present unique characteristics that need to be recognized and considered when developing tailored prevention strategies.
